git 'r done

yep -- the best way to get over the whining is to WORK!  All of the squash is now picked, cleaned up and tubbed up ... the critters are moving in fast.   15 - 16 bushels of wonderful tasty squash ...

So last night I trekked home from the scrap shack via the field road (in Dad's truck aka: the space shuttle) and the twins (deer)  were nibbling on watermelon in the patch .. --- they dashed across the field road in front of me into the woods --- I looked over out the drivers window -- and there was mama ---she almost ran into the side of the truck .... damn

-- imagine explaining that to elder #1 --- "oh by the way, that dent in your truck came from mama deer running into me" -- believe me, it wouldn't go over well.

150 yards later -- I'm headed thru the windbreak to the yard and two bucks are standing on the road -- dang near picked off one of them ... (double damn) ...

Meetings tonight -- but will glean out the rest of the Sangria watermelon tomorrow and load 'em up  -- then it's repack the Market truck

Someday I might actually sit down and sew again -- someday ...

so ....

the big green machine (combine) headed over the hill and on to the next corn field ... it really doesn't take long to chew thru our humble acreage ....

after the Market this afternoon -- I took a load of old melons out to dump --- far far away from the patch -- as I cleared the windbreak -- 2 freeking deer were nibbling in the patch and the combine was going by --- close by ... the buggers kept on eating.  (%#)%*%)(+_)

so I picked out another 2 rows of squash -- 3 rows to go and they are all picked, ditto the pumpkins and fancies ... 1 more pass thru the Sangria watermelon and perhaps a few black diamonds and crimson sweets ... then the disk will chop it all up.  the end.

early on I said this was the end.  it might be.  the planning, planting and weeding went really well this year .. deer control was pretty successful until 10 days ago ... but dang the picking, packing and selling is tiring.  has been exhausting ....

I cram a lot into September -- Commission Gig, the re-election gig, the Office Gig, Lake Time, Picking, Packing and Selling.  Selling has been sporadic this season -- our customers counts have been down ... and no one seems to be able to explain it ... or make me understand it -- I think it is location and the lack of marketing -- it's weird.

I'm tired and whining -- I promised I'd quit whining last week ...

On the positive side -- the sun will shine tomorrow and it's going to be a fabulous day!

the happy place is under water

So the happy place received nine inches of rain Wednesday into Thursday ... and I think the lake level might be going down.  Think.  15 feet of our shore/beach/sitting area is underwater ... it could always be worse.

Sunday, September 25, 2016

ahhh, it's official, it's fall

Teresa was the sneaky one -- I take the pictures, I'm not in them ..
Kevin and I were having a cheesehead discussion ---
good thing there is no "smell-o-vision" after Market (re-packing the truck in 80' and humid) and picking 3 rows of squash ... I was hot and sticky ...
Just thought this was cool ...

And so it begins ... at least the headlines and a couple of acres ...
they were setting the mapping / yield software in the combine

another Saturday morning

picked packed and loaded for Market ... zee truck is packed crazy -- it's a disaster -- so set up will be entertaining.  lots of squash and fancies -- watermelon, which is coming to an end ... or certain varieties are almost done.  or the critters will get them.

my garden shirt is looking pretty tough ... picking in the mud is hard work ...
it also has multiple applications of bug spray soaked into it
had to wear the mesh headgear again last night
yep -- the shoes are almost done too
15 hours after the rain -- Thursday -- (this was taken Thursday night) - and I still have standing water on the field road -- although it's a mud pit now -- drove thru it a lot in 48 hours.

this end of the patch flooded in June, July and again Wednesday night -- so nothing, even the weeds didn't do well down here ... notice the critter tracks -- the buggers are back at it in full force
I have picked all of the pumpkins -- they move in and started sampling --- between the critters and the wetness --- it's a bad pumpkin crop

the view from my chair at Tuesdays' Market -- me and my crochet hook ...

me and the weather.

the weather is wacked.  flood warnings are posted.  before it rains.  3 - 4 more inches forecasted.  thank you mother nature -- I love picking watermelons, squash & pumpkins in the rain.  it makes me happy -- NOT.

I went to the Tuesday market -- kind of a bust.  not a lot of foot traffic  -- need to figure out why .. lots of pondering/visiting while we were sitting there ... a grand total of 3 vendors.

it wasn't worth my time to sit there -- it was good for me -- but I had other things in other places -- I'm grumpy and whining.  need a bit of adjustment.

topsy turvey

it is just not fair.

in amid the weekend brain fuzz - and the Monday morning clarity .. I finally connected the dots and realized who, what, where and when

clients come and clients go - they move, they grow -- change is constant around here, we get excited when they move on to greater challenges

these particular clients moved on to new jobs - closer to home and family in Ohio ... 3 kids and one on the way, beautiful family -- nice people ..

Thursday, they were in a multi car pile up somewhere in Ohio/Tennessee (it doesn't matter)
The two oldest -- girls -- were badly injured

God gained two more angels in the last 24 hours

I cannot fathom the pain of that young family.
Hold your ones close tonight and every night.
We don't know what tomorrow will bring.

The weekend in pictures ... lot's of them ...

A lot of picking, a lot of selling (truly), visiting with out of town family, trip to Mankato, off to the cabin -- back home.  Out to pick this morning -- too wet, so back to the cabin ... finally home late this afternoon to pick the squash ..
Saturday night at the cabin was gorgeous ... today it was windy ... the end is approaching quickly.  Made it to Mankato Saturday -- need to stay away -- $600 later at Office Maxx...  argh ....
Have a great week ..

yep, this pretty much sums up my week ...
I need to be reminded (daily) to slow down and enjoy life

so - I hope to kick up my heels and make a little dust (well it rained again that won't happen) ... but you get the drift

Happy Weekend.

Reminder to self

I've been crabby, really crabby lately.  So, I ran across this little ditty and thought it was an appropriate note to myself.

And alleviate said crabbiness -- I picked squash -- bushels of squash.

and then it became weirder

oh ya, it was Marie's Mad Monday ...

1.  driving around with the tailgate down.
2.  arriving an hour early for a meeting
3.  said meeting then running waaaayyyy to long
4.  never got to market in North Mankato (see #3)
5.  "no this is not Lagers" -- wrong number Bruce
6.  "no this is not Phil" -- wrong cell number Joe
7.  lost my office/government center keys
8.  found said keys but discovered the 3 blind mice
9.  mice in house garage -- Ruby parked outside last night.

Today needs to be Terrific Tuesday ..... and I'm wearing long pants (as in dress pants) ( and not loose linen pants) for the first time since early May.  DO NOT like wearing long pants ....

enough -- going off to do my Happy Tuesday Dance.

I am such a dork

I managed to drive the truck into the office via ... the slow route.  I forgot the tailgate was down -- my tent and a bushel of squash were on the tailgate ... made it all the way to the office and didn't loose a thing .... dumb dork.

After Market on Saturday -- I headed for the beach!  A nap, finished my book -- pizza and new attitude.  At dark -- and the bug invasion I came to the office to finish a couple of projects ....

Yesterday -- back to the beach!  The wind was fierce.  So fierce -- it drove us from the beach to the deck.  Needless to say -- the bugs couldn't land in it .. no nap -- but 6 winter scarves are fringed and ready for new homes.  A little touring and a little cleaning  ... a good day ...

Tonight I'm headed to the North Mankato Farmer's Market -- we'll see what it brings .. me and 65 watermelons!

Sunday, September 11, 2016

My memories of 9/11 are a bit different than most.  It was a day -- one of those days we all know where we were and what we were doing ...  I, well I closed on this old house.  And then I went home and watched history live.

Spring 2010 == still snow banks in the yard ...

 the back porch is gone

this was after Thrivent left, before the new roof, sidewalk and the front bushes demolished.
one of my all time favorite photos .. 2008 or 2009 ..

time to sell ....

Usually -- I start picking on Thursday night and finish on Friday -- that is the normal routine and this week was normal -- there was a few rain drops on Thursday and the mosquitos are brutal ...
Once the squash and pumpkin season starts (soon) I pick Wednesday, Thursday and Friday .... and depending upon if I attend the Tuesday market -- I sometimes pick on Sunday and Monday -- it's a daily event!
This is my first load of Black Diamond Watermelons ... they are huge and tasty.  Sometimes too large.   It's a lot of watermelon -- the picklers love the rind for watermelon pickles.  For some reason I have an entire row of them.  I don't usually plant that many --

Again, the obligatory loaded F150 shot -- she's got a load on her again.

It's a busy weekend in town -- Rock Bend Folk Festival is going happening -- Parents Weekend at GAC -- Sidewalk Sale Days and of course, Farmer's Market Day!
It is going to be busy and fun!

just when you need it the most

I lead a really crazy life and a lot of times there are roadblocks -- controllable and not so controllable.  Weird stuff happens, daily -- people are weird -- I tend to forget that fact.
Since I was the only vendor at Market yesterday -- I opted to be prudent and came back to the office to work .. that is the way I was wired ... work, then play.
I put "free watermelons" on facebook -- got to get 'em ate somehow.   So Simon and Sawyer brought me a "watermelon" and took a bunch home in their wagon.  Made my day.

people amaze me ... simply amazing

their strength, grace, fortitude, kindness and determination

Jacob Wetterling -- you are our hero

R & R Weekend.

I never get tired of this view ...

important stuff -- coffee, glasses, phone, books/magazines .. bug spray

and then the sprinkles arrived
moved indoors - back outdoors - back indoors ...

Jake didn't like the sprinkles either

the blooms

Sunday, September 4, 2016

well, another day of Market

eventually this becomes

this -- I picked up two new 6' tables on Wednesday -- not sure of the layout until I arrived and well, this won't happen again -- need to V or L them instead ... the goal is to keep everything in the shade ..

this was before I started and I forgot to take a shot when done ... I was down to one table of mixed melons, one tub of small stuff ... and one tub of odd stuff -- enough leftovers for Tuesday's Market.

handsome buggers aren't they!

defining moments

  the morning news headlines ..

Jacob Wetterling -- please let it be the end.  the Wettering family deserves the end.

I live in a sheltered world.  I know that -- I like it that way.  those defining moments when everyone knows where they were when it happened.

the defining moments that rocked my world -- a kidnapping, a tornado and some cancer.  No of which I could/should/need to control.

My heart has always hoped for a miracle, my mind knows it probably wouldn't happen.  That family needs to know.

keeping the faith with a heavy heart today .. if it isn't Jacob == it is someone else .... and that my friends is equally frightening.

10/22/89 is a long time to wait for answers.

bustin' out of work

a client stopped in the office at 2:10ish and did a little business and then proceeded to ask me "what the hell are you doing working ... get out of here"   so I left the 3rd street office and headed to my outdoor office .... wonderful afternoon hanging in the patch

one never knows what's hanging out on my ATV ... melons, sprayer of "repels all" that white thing stuck in the side of the box above the tail light is a knife ... works.

the annual -- "how many melons can she put in one truck" picture ... it's a screen shot of my picking life .. dirty truck, multiple pairs of gloves, orange tent, dry rung hanging over the box ...

and this dude needed to get in the truck ... all 40lbs of it....

my goal this season was to pick, sort, pack and price in one smooth move ... well, it works when I can find a marker ...

my shoe laces are full of sand burrs -- the native "blooms" of the prairie -- a stalk of them got between the tongue of my show and my ankle....words were uttered.  not kind words either
I tend to break out from their "bite."
