doings .... celebrations ...

The shop/store is celebrating 50 years of business this weekend.  Nick has vowed  to post pictures every night his week on their wastebook site.  These are from 1982, when operations moved from the farm down to the highway.

I do believe that is I leaning on the tree stump and my rear end to the camera.  Trying to swear less, not sure if it is working.  Anyhow -- the pictures are cool, I can't wait to see what else he digs up and shares.

1982 -- I was 22.  Oh to be 22 again.  Well, probably -- not really.  I and everyone else didn't have a clue -- young and naïve.   Worked a lot back then too -- no play was the rule.  I worked almost full time and went to school full time -- and there was farm work too.  Skills and habits that 33 34 years later I still have -- over 1/2 my life has passed since then.  egads.

On that note -- time for some TV time, coffee and a good book.  Last night was a rough night and today it was a difficult day to be a Commissioner.  I don't always like spending 2.4 Million of other peoples money.  And the office chaos continued.   And it was cold and rainy.  And I'm whining.  Ya, I'm an old naïve whining workaholic.  egads.  (kind of like that egads!)
As Uncle George would say -- "see ya later alligator" ...

back to the River

Since yesterday was too beautiful to waste -- Mom and I took a stroll down to the river ... well, we drove to the Treaty Center and walked the Crossing Trail ....
dang it was a gorgeous day ....

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood;
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;
Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,
And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.
I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

Happy Birthday

Today is Joyce's birthday.

86 ..... ah, the memories --

family that really isn't family ...

the camping/fishing trips when we were little
snowmobiling / sliding on the back hill
crazy days shopping for school clothes in Mankato

holidays and family gatherings
growing old with us ... celebrating new milestones
   divorces and new beginnings
   college graduations
   Montana road trips
   major life events  ....

   so many many little things

and all the things she's missed in the last nine years ...

today --- we celebrate and smile and remember with joy

Green Friday

the only day in 365 that retailers might make money.  truly.

I spent most of the day at the office.  making money.  actually fixing nightmares that really don't pay well is more accurate.  a day of fixing shit.  happens.

I did a spot of gift card shopping via the internet - shopping in my jammies is always good.  The only way to shop.  and Kohls of course because every aging diva needs at least 2 more long sleeve white t shirts.  I've become one of those divas -- white t shirts every day.  well, I purchased striped ones too.  and shorts.  always need more shorts in Minnesota in November.  I did well --  I avoided Lands End and CJBanks even with their enticing 50% off everything -- ditto Joanne Fabrics and the Fat Quarter Shop ... zip, nada, no deals for me.

Just feed me drugs - evidently I need more drugs.

Saturday's Project List (we'll see how this goes)

-- get the office roping/bows/fancies on the fence (it's 50' - git 'r done)
-- keep plugging at the free projects (see above)
-- laundry?
-- piece back / quilt throw
-- quilt crib quilt
-- square up quilted stuff
-- find missing thumb drive
-- trash/recycling
-- vac office basement - it's a spooky place

no turkey today ... must be the only person on the plant who didn't have leftovers -- other than turkey we are kind of light on the leftovers.  7p's ....

so, many things in which to be thankful.  mindful. grateful.  I think this will be the sign of the season on the wall behind my desk.

got up and got the bird in the roaster at 5:30, the potato's are peeled, the beans, sweet potato's, corn and dressing are ready for the oven.  coleslaw, veggies, cranberry's hanging out in the fridge.

laundry load # 2 is in the now functioning washing machine (many many thanks), elder #1 vacuumed the floors

the paper has been read, the ads have been perused -- don't really need anything -- I don't think there will be cases of copy paper on sale for Black Friday ..

I've been looking for the perfect black/white striped dress for months (it's a pinerest/pintrest obsession) and I found one at Old Navy online last night -- $24 w/shipping -- lets hope it lives up to its expectations.

so, once the food has been consumed, the dishes washed -- the crafting will begin ... the long arm and 3 quilts await me -- it's going to be a load, lock and sewing kind of afternoon ....

Tracks in the sand...

So I took these shots last Sunday when I wandered out to the patch -- raccoon tracks in the mud that dried, got wet again and then dried again.  My best guess, I'm probably way off track ...
Kinda cool.

At odds and out of sorts again today.  Focus was tough -- I did manage to fill the curbie with crap out of the office basement -- new renter coming late next week and he wants to hook up washer and dryer and well -- the basement needs lots of work.  heaps of work.
I quilted a fairly large throw tonight, Mom's Christmas present -- used some cheap on sale batting from Joanne's ... have 4 more yards of the crap.  The HQ16 did not like it at all.  Next up is another big throw -- the "finish up the UFO" pile is dwindling.  At this rate I'll be binding all weekend long -- 4 on the table now -- 3 more to quilt and that will be 7 finishes in 10 days.  The anticipation of something new is building.  I think it is going to be something traditional, like log cabins in not so traditional fabrics ... time will tell.

memories ... lots of memories

I had a crafty Grandma, really crafty.  She made things, lots of things.
Cousin Stacey post this pic on wastebook -- a picture of THE tree skirt -- everyone received one for Christmas one year, they've become family treasures.  One year, it was crochet table doilies -- round and about 30" in diameter -- each of the married grandkids.  I received mine for Valentine's Day.
Seeing it on wastebook brought back a flood of memories and some happy tears.  Holidays tend to bring out the happy tears.
Tomorrow I'm digging out my doily -- 'tis the season for happy memories.

and so it begins

freezing rain

really, is this necessary???
don't think so ...

the last hurray ....

and we return to where we started
brown sand disked up

All fall I knew this would be my last season -- truly, I was tired, cranky and well freeking busy -- I never seemed to catch up.  Evidently, working at the office, the commissioner gig, picking, packing, selling the goods, running for office, having a sick parent, trying to get to the lake -- didn't leave for a lot of spare time.  When we were cleaning up and closing up the cabin I really regretted not having more late summer and fall time daydreaming on the deck -- so I knew this was going to be the end.
The final hurray - it's a weird feeling --
October was still crazy and finally in November I kind of fell caught up .. so much so that I felt the need to re-arrange furniture (wth)  --  my endless list is down to a half page.
I washed Ruby and she went into storage today -- she still needs an oil change and to be detailed -- but she is easily accessible -- the forecast for the week is wet and white.  Ruby doesn't do snow.  Ever.  Never.  The ATV is also in semi-storage -- if Turkey Day is decent, I'll take a ride or two.

Bird watching kind of weekend.

Finally a relaxing kind of weekend -- no rushing here, there and everywhere, no "just have to get this done" kind of projects.  That being said -- I'm getting a lot done ....
1.  Laundry -- it never ends.
2.  Quilting UFO's --3 sets of orphaned blocks have become quilt tops.
3.  Quilted a small crib quilt.
4.  Finished moving furniture in my office.
5.  Scanned a couple hundred pages -- might as well.
6.  Made tasty chicken hot dish.
7.  Meal prepped for the week.
8.  Office homework.
9.  Book shopped on Amazon and loaded the iPad.
not bad -- and it's only 10:00 on Sunday ... more sewing to come, a couple of hours of office time -- will help keep the week ahead under control.  maybe a trip to Mankato -- maybe a drive out to the cabin --- maybe, maybe, maybe ...

ruffle the feathers ....

interesting day to today -- Chamber of Commerce's annual Board Retreat/Planning Conference ...

I think I may have ruffled a few feathers amid the birds -- sometimes it is good to ruffle the feathers of the flock.  We forget to think outside the nest ...

that being said.

once in a while  ----  wastebook has some jewels ...

amid all the drama  -   wisdom/clarity arrives.

so, yes, I saved this from someone's post ...
it is worth sharing

Tuesdays in Commissioner-dom

8:05 - Department Head Evaluation
9:00 - Ditch Hearing
10:00 - Board Workshop
1:00 - R9 Revolving Loan Committee - Mankato
4:30 - Collaborative Meeting
6:00 - Sioux Trails Board Meeting - New Ulm

I can't complain -- but when I finally get home tonight -- bed will feel okay.

Missed lunch -- had cookies at R9 gig.

and I rolled into the home garage at 8:59pm.  Stopped at the freezer for a cupcake on the way thru the porch.  I earned that treat today.  My lovely firm sleep number bed awaits me.  Now hopefully, the cupcake will not exacerbate the nighttime acid reflux and the coyotes will be silent.

therapy ...

Therapy comes in many forms.   Mine comes in the form of sewing.   I finally fired up the Handquilter on Friday night and quilted a crib quilt.  Finally.   Since the road trip to Pine City in August, the two scrapbooking gigs and market season -- there really hasn't been much time for creativity.  So ....

Saturday morning I loaded up Mom and Auntie Joanne and we road tripped it to Burnsville and the SRHarris Fabric Outlet -- lots of pretties in this pile.  Like 33 yards of pretties, not in the picture is a kit and 2 spools of Aurifil orange variegated thread.
And this took less than an hour -- most of the time was at the cutting table -- so, after this we headed south and stopped at Kohls in Shakopee -- scored a pair of shorts for $3.25 -- yep a deal !  another pair of leggings (quit laughing) -- and lunch at Zuppa Cucina -- highly recommend this place --
Came home and back to the sewing room -- 60 minutes with the vacuum cleaner -- hmmm --- finally sat down and finished piecing top #1 -- some blocks I found in the UFO pile, Sunday morning it was top #2 --- again in the UFO pile and then I pressed top #3 -- it was hanging on the long arm and top #4 pieced in Pine City ... the handiquilter will be busy this week.
Spectacular Sunday on Daisy Lane -- between the bouts of cleaning frenzy -- there was time to enjoy the beauty of November ....
I have no moon pictures -- night photography and I don't always agree -- but it was gorgeous ... even this morning in the inbound commute ...
Tally Ho!  It's Monday --- Enjoy the moments.

Sunday, November 13, 2016

I stole borrowed this shot from the Herald's website -- I'm guessing it's a cell shot from some one else.  At any rate -- it's their shot and I'll give 'em credit for it.
Early Friday morning -- a 12 year old girl was reported missing -- Mya.  36 + hours later she was found by deer hunters ALIVE in the river somewhere below our house.  Which by road is just under 2 miles from her last reported sighting -- maybe 2 1/2 miles by river -- various media outlets are reporting details and they are differing.  It does not matter, she is ALIVE.
Mya has special needs.  She is ALIVE.
There are so many blessings in this miracle.
The air ambulance swooped over the house (and Nick in his deer stand) ... and instantly landed -- at first we though it was an accident -- and then the social media explosion of the news.
I'm doing poorly with the social media diet.  Very poorly (I'll be walking several miles today).  On weekends social media seems to be the only local news source we have -- and frankly who knows what is or isn't accurate...

Saturday, November 12, 2016

so, this is the

breakfast du jour ...

Thursday, November 10, 2016

The social media diet begins today ... at least wastebook.  I've attempted this before and failed miserably.  This time is different.  The pre-election propaganda was bad and the post election is even worse.  Not to mention the idle incorrect mean gossip.

I think I understand the generations who live/die/breathe via social media and sometimes I feel old and stodgy because it feels like it consumes the world.  The art of a phone call, a handwritten note or even a personal visit has been lost.

So to keep myself on the wastebook diet -- there will be rewards and punishments.  Good grief, I sound like an irate parent.

Wastebook Rules:

1.  Once a day.
2.  Weekly posting "this week on Daisy Ln"
3.  No wastebook on 3rd Street.

Wastebook rewards:
7 days of rules = fun dinner at a new restaurant.
14 days of rules = fabric!

Wastebook punishments:
10 minutes of wastebook = 20 minutes of exercise.
I'm changing this up to 1,000 extra fit bit steps -- much easier to track
So, that is my plan.  Plotter that I've become -- this might be kind of fun.  I do have an Instagram account -- but that is more visual and in my world quilt related.

ready, set, --- go.

I won.

I'm not sure any of us can truly judge this particular election without experiencing the future.  This Presidential election has brought politics back into our lives -- nary a day or conversation went past without some kind of comment.

It was a nasty mudslinging election.

Surprises, upsets and interesting twists at the local level.

Change, it is all about change.

Tuesday, November 8, 2016

14 hours and

the end of the election.

if you live in my commissioner district -- I'd appreciate your support.  VOTE, it is important, it is your right and your choice.

I'm headed to a tax conference in Mankato today -- should keep my mind busy.  That is good.

60 hours ....

yep, 60 hours away from the office and it was glorious weather .... I crossed of several projects on the endless list of "things to do" ...

the scrapping divas and I had a great time on Saturday -- it was exhausting, crafting is hard work -- I managed to get 15 scrapbook pages ... laid out and glued down -- need to pretty them up a bit, 60 note cards for the office, finished a crochet scarf and typed a couple of office documents on the laptop.  I walked 10,000 steps and had a massage (a brief massage) --- good food, good company.

Sunday was home project day -- 5 yes, 5 loads of laundry --- the first 4 got hung on the clothes line -- the last hit the dryer -- the POS (piece of shit) washing machine got me thru the first 4 with nary a burp -- the last load -- not so good.

All of my stuff from Saturday is unpacked and semi-organized, I finished a book, helped the boys get the cover on the camper .. sorted squash and pumpkins -- dumped a few more, stored bushel baskets and tubs -- helped Mom Christmas shop via Lands' End and the 40% off gig ....

Cooked supper, did dishes -- hauled trash .. it was a dang busy day.   Never did get a nap.

Sunday, November 6, 2016

I should title this post -- "how much crap do 4 women need for scrapbooking" ... two carloads would be the answer -- rolling buggies to haul stuff in and out ... I brought my own chair -- a good day was had by all ....
laughter -- the best

Saturday, November 5, 2016

the goodness continues

I left the office early -- again, two days in a row peeps.  Put up "the too nice to work" sign and left.  Truly, left.  I had a load of office yard trash to dump and then I went home and took an ATV ride around the farm.   Deer hunting begins tomorrow (at least slug season starts tomorrow) and then I'm grounded to the yard ... because THERE IS NO HUNTING IN THE YARD.  Argh.
leaf control -- although I'm not sure why he's vac'ing them way down here ...

those damn black diamonds ... I think they cross pollinated with the crimson sweets -- might explain why they just didn't seem to ripen normally ... notice the "hut" in the upper right corner.

I should smash this one just to check it out
the serious hunter will have at least 2 maybe three of these spread around ... this one seems to be a bit close to the yard (and next to the patch)

argh ... I hate to see the unpicked, unripe, crow pecked waste....

ahh 65'

So, it was 65', sunny and very little breeze yesterday ... I thought knew I needed fresh air and some attitude adjustment.  I got it .....

yes, this is less than 10 blocks from the house .... the famous "crossing" at Traverse des Sioux ... 10 blocks and I rarely get down there ... the high river makes it pretty spectacular this time of year
I should have went last weekend while we still had leaves.

I had a 4:00 gig at the History Center (a 3 hour indoor gig) so I left the office early, grabbed a McD's iced coffee and hit the walking trail --- I gave myself 45 minutes to enjoy it and damn it was well worth it ... I was the only one on the trail .... well, me and a coyote, a couple of squirrels and a raccoon -- I deviated off the main trail and took the fork off to the crossing -- once you arrive at the river it is pretty fantastic ... the cottonwood trees are huge ----

Wednesday, November 2, 2016

and then she forgot

or lost or misplaced her keys -- which I eventually found ... in my tote bag.

managed to drive home without the iPad and I cannot survive without my iPad ...

had McD's breakfast for supper ... the only way to go ....

took a cool pix in the McD's parking lot ..... and left the phone cords at the office
it is on Instagram and Wastebook.

went to a Transit Meeting in Mankato -- kind of got lost
googling it up while sitting in a parking lot and realized I was in the right parking lot ...
      wth ....

remember to bring home the goodies and lamp for Saturday's Arlington Adventure
4 crazy scrapbooking, cardmaking, crocheting, crafty women leaving town.

she needs to go to bed --- with a real book tonight.

30 days of Gratitude

So, it is November -- 30 days of Gratitude starting today -- see the sidebar.  Today I am grateful for beautiful early morning sunrises.   Early morning -- not 7:30am,  5:00am is much better -- as I age (quit laughing) I need more daylight.  Perhaps I'm scrambling to get way to much done during a day -- not sure --

This Saturday is the switch to Daylight Savings -- falling back -- also know as 3 months of freeking darkness -- but in 52 days -- we gain precious minutes of daylight -- but hey, who is counting!  I!
