life goes on .... and on ...

this was my view Sunday night in the patch ... southbound from the squash end to the pumpkin end.  things are growing  --  weeds too.

and here is looking northbound from the middle to the well, damn deer.
enough typed.

so it was a long day in Diva-dom.  a Board meeting that was long, confusing and well, frustrating.  I finally got to the office and I accomplished very very little.  I did manage to purchase a new dehumidifier and it seems to be working ... loaded it into the front seat of the Mustang .. 'twas a sight.

I spent 90 minutes putzing in the patch.  Spot spraying, a little hoeing, a little dusting and a lot of talking to the plants.  Plants listen well.  Really well.

Time for the shower and the bernina -- or maybe my book or maybe both.
indecision was the name of the game today.

Focus will be the word of the day tomorrow.

1st Market of the 2016 season

since the fruits and veggies are no where near ready ... months to go ... and some market changes were favorable to non-produce items ... I brought 11 crib quilts, a bunch of pillowcases and some left over kids clothes from past sewing binges ...

and the above sold (and some pillowcases and some dresses.)  I told Jean on Friday night it was going to be "boom or bust" ... I was pleasantly surprised -- really surprised.

it was freeking, and i mean freeking hot.  I left at 11:30 -- got home and slurped down another quart of water and napped.  the heat zapped any energy ... and the endless wind.

all my stuff fit in the back of Mom's SUV -- my truck was buried behind other sets of wheels and hers was handy (and dirty)

once the front moved thru I took a little wander thru the yard (with a camera) ... it's a weird year things aren't blooming on a normal schedule ... perhaps it's just I

so, I

think I should rename this blog ...

"this crazy life I lead" .... I'm sure someone else has already claimed the name ...

I made it thru manic Monday by embracing manic Monday -- including the Board of Equalization and Appeals ...

Tuesday was Department Head/Board Workshop and finally --finally, Mr. K cut my hair --- I have half as much hair and finally do not resemble a brillo pad on legs.

Yesterday -- was the dentist -- the jury is still out on young doctor B --  and last night was a return trip to Mankato for R9 meetings --

So this morning -- at 5:55am ... I started out the day with an ATV/walking tour of the patch I hadn't been there for 48 hours!  It's still there.  The sweet corn is done.  Dried up, burned up, too much nitrogen -- gone --

The rest of it seems to be plodding along -- I keep reminding myself (a) I planted late -- and that was a good thing since we had hard frost on May 14th and 15th ... another hoeing and some weed control over the weekend will tidy things up a bit.

so next up ...
Conference call
Meeting ..
Clean out the F150 for Saturday ...

embracing a Monday

for real -- because I truly HATE Mondays.

So this morning I was rolling for the office at 5:38am.  Freeking early.  By 7:30, 2 big payrolls done, 2 sales taxes done ....

By noon -- another payroll and I mowed the grass ....

by 2:00 pm (now) my 2290's are done and ready to mail and the final sales tax info has arrived.

Next up -- a shower -- I have meetings at 6:00ish ... need to smell pretty -- not that cut grass and lawnmower gas are fragrant ... but ...

'tis good to be me.....

'twas a busy day

the patch -- elder #1 ran the digger thru the rows on Thursday night -- looking okay ... since I planted two weeks later than normal -- things seem to be slow .. plus we've had the wackiest of weather ...

I dumped (planted) all of my left over watermelon seed as end caps at this end -- these hills were planted almost 10 days after the first melon hills -- and they've caught up to the first planting ..

the weekend goal was to spend as much time as possible at the lake -- well at 8:30 last night I took 25 pictures of the petunias - some of them turned out pretty well ...
I would have stayed out there but I ran out of clean clothes -- it was a tough wardrobe day .. 3 shirts in 9 hours ...

by 8:00 the lake was like glass (and the mosquito's were beginning to arrive)

memories ...

just an empty spool of thread
325 yards Talon Color # 33 (dark pink)
29 cents ...

12, 13 maybe 14 going on 15 years ago when Grandma moved to the nursing home (the Grandview Hilton) ... I got an entire shoe box of thread -- all sizes of spools and all the colors known to sewers everywhere ....

I've been piecing and quilting with that thread all these years ... I wound bobbin after bobbin and sewed it up into oodles of quilts (large & small), curtains, clothes, tablecloths, pillow cases, fancy little girl dresses ....

This morning -- the last yard of the last spool ---

strip piecing some hunks of pink
who knows where the strip pieces will end up

I think this empty wooden spool was destined to be the last spool.
and soon it will be re-purposed into something equally loved
and it will bring up oodles of smiles and memories.

ah the sound

of an old tractor puttering along.   and where is said puttering ..... oh no .... he's in the patch.

Dad ran up and down the rows with the digger ... not the tiller, the digger --- sometimes he and the tiller get a bit out of control.

looking good out there -- every hill was hoed Wednesday or Thursday night ... squash and pumpkins dusted for bugs ... sunflowers and zinnias are up ... deer are already nibbling on the pumpkin vines.

  life is good.

summer the season of endless sunshine -- it's wearing me out I'm on the go from 5:30 am 'til 9:15 ... I feel the deck chair calling my name.

oh ya ..

so, this little quip from facebook wastebook does a dang good job of describing me lately.

the scrapping divas and I had a night out last night -- a little (well, a lot -- the portions are huge) Mexican Supper and beverages ... and a lot of catching up ... we all seem to lead extraordinarily busy lives

the wild weather seems to have moved east.  7 inches of rain in 7 days is crazy -- I didn't make it out to the patch to see if it had survived yesterdays deluge --

14,250

the number of steps on the fitbit before it crapped out (well -- more like ran out of juice) ... I'm running out of juice also.

So no list today -- but dang heaps of projects have been completed.

1.  Laundry (well one load of sheets).
2.  Went to the office at 7:30am (yes am)
... finally planted the hostas I bought off of craigs list
... finally planted the hostas I bought from Karen's
      ... mulched newly planted hostas
... planted the tubs and pots (well 4 of the 6)
... mowed the lawn (after I heard the renters moving)
... cut back a bush (large weed)
... attempted to spray the weeds in the yard (time will tell)

stopped at McDonalds  on the way home for a treat --- asked for a Carmel Moo-Latte at the drive up -- the young clerk was polite enough to mention that it was a Dairy Queen item and I wasn't at the DQ ... shit -- I was hot and tired  (I meant carmel frappe )

3.  Fed/watered/supervised the chickens, cats and pheasants.
4.  Plucked eggs -- the girls are late layers ... they dwaddle in the nesting boxes.
5.  Shower

6.  Finally made it to the lake.  Finally.  Nap on the deck ....
... planned out the next couple of weeks, meetings, projects clothes
... yes my wardrobe choices are on a spreadsheet.  me bad.
... finished my $14.99 book from iTunes ... argh
               (William Kent Krueger's new one)

7.  Back home to repeat #3 ...
8.  Walked the melon patch and checked things out ... the hoeing starts again tomorrow.

9.  Cleaned parts of the basement bathroom
10.  Vac'd upstairs

11.  Shower

12.  I'm ready for bed.

one more day ...

Friday's weather madness --

the pitter patter gushing of rain overpowering the gutters ... and everything else
I was lucky at the office and at home
trees are down all over town
60 mph wind gusts, driving rain and of course, hail.
might as well have it all at once.

the gourds ... looks pretty awful ..this was an hour after the deluge.
looks better today ... well still looks damp but most of the water has soaked in.

pheasant duty -- trust me this little bugger is screaming (chirping) LET ME OUT, LET ME OUT, I WANNA BE FREE ... another day of this heat and her wish will come true.  I had opened the door at lunch (while plucking eggs from the chicken shack) and wasn't sure if the pheasant house would still be standing  -- 60 mph winds are evil.

my ATV and Dad's Tracker ... mine has no rust and better treads on the tires, his on the other hand was much less expensive.  I get wet when it rains -- his roof leaks too.

I was hoping it would rain more overnight and wash it off -- no such luck.

I am eagerly awaiting the break in the weather -- so far today I've sewed a bit, more freeking laundry, animal duty, office duty in town -- it was too hot so I came home, office duty at home (all afternoon) and finally watched the Belmont .. that was a close one!

so

what exactly have I accomplished this week.  not a dang thing.

well, a lot of payroll, a lot of paper shuffling -- yesterday's shuffling was a disaster from minute one to minute 5:15.

the heat and humidity has arrived.  I think the patch needs it.  the squash and pumpkins look good -- but the melons are kind of sitting there doing nada.

the chaos continued once I left for the farm -- just got started sewing and visitors arrived --

got back down to the machine and the C02 detector started chirping -- batteries.
I then proceed to take a shower and read my book -- which after 5 pages I discovered I had previously read.

I went to bed -- seemed to be the prudent thing to do.

This weeks completed projects:

1. seminar
2. boatloads of payroll
3. laundry?
4. dishes
5. trash
6. hoed pumpkins, fancies and melons
7. returned library books
(pathetic -- returning library books is not a project)

4/10ths

all that rumbling and a mere 4/10 of an inch ....

finished hoeing the watermelons last night -- the buggers need to grow faster .. need moisture, heat and sun.

the rumbling sent me into the house at 7:30 and nothing happened for 3 more hours ... lots of rumbling -- no lightening (at least while I was hoeing)

tonight is the squash ... and the late stuff I planted.

then done 'til Monday when I start again.   I hoe, I hoe, I hoe.

Hump Day ...

   Thankfully it's hump day!

Spent 8 1/2 hours in front of my computer screens in a webcast seminar yesterday - it was a good seminar.  And I'm currently listening to another one ... as I age I have less patience.  So, webcasts are much better than rush hour traffic -- although sitting in this chair gets old also.

Spent ninety minutes with the hoe in the garden last night.  Pumpkins and fancies hoed.  Dang, that ground was hard -- that end of the patch has flooded twice this season.  Tonight is the watermelons and squash --

All of the hoeing will be done before the heat wave hits on Thursday -- then it will be time to SEW.

    Happy Hump Day!

Monday, June 6, 2016

it was the weekend.

Well, the list thing on Saturday didn't work.  Not at all.  I spent most of the weekend at the lake.  On Saturday, the laptop, a box of work and a good radio station got a lot done -- and when I needed a break -- I finished my library book.

Yesterday, I attempted to finish up the client project (I'm as far as I can go without more info) -- and I started a new book.   It was a sunny, windy, cool, warm day to be at the lake.  Too windy for me on the water but our "treehouse" and it's deck is just fine.

The boys went finishing -- above is Nick's 37" northern -- they fished a bit ... the dog swam .. we cooked .. we ate .. we packed up and came home.

8 miles and 12 minutes to paradise.

hoe, hoe, hoe

yep, two and a half  hours of hoeing last night.  me, the hoe and the sprouts.

hoeing to keep the cutworms unhappy -- they don't like crawling over rough dirt --

best way to check out which varieties germinated the best and worst.  all of the watermelons and all of the squash are done.  the sugar baby watermelons and one variety of acorn -- are slow growers or poor growers ... time will tell

rain today ... pumpkins, fancies, weird stuff on Sunday morning and Monday night I'll start all over again.

the more I hoe -- the better things grow.  ground is hard -- so it will get easier they more they get hoed.

hoe, hoe, hoe ....

Thursday, June 2, 2016

and the 2nd day of June

she's about to spend more money.

wth.  need to finish planting the tubs and planters here on 3rd street ...

  awesome beautiful day.

it might be easier to stop swearing than stop spending money.
  just a thought.

June ....

 oh June -- you've arrived ....

So my goal/resolution/mantra for June -- spend no money.

Ha, it's 6:59 am and I just purchased fabric.  WTH.

Over the weekend I decided the Farmer's Wife Sampler Quilt should be my summer project at the lake.  Yes, I sew to relax.  So -- I found the downloadable templates (thank you) ... started perusing the fabric stash

And after much debate (who's kidding who) I opted for Camille Roskelly's version ... love the reds, greys and teals

so with a coupon code I bought 3 fat quarter bundles in reds, greys and teals to fill out my stash of reds, greys and teals.

I've lost my mind.
